Going green for families in need By SUSAN SIMMONS Guest Commentary My Eastern Shore, MarylandDENTON — “Go Green!!” means more than just an environmental priority. This time of year it’s also celebrating the Irish spirit in all of us. The St. Patty’s Day 5K event on March 15 at the Fretterd Community Center in Denton is an opportunity to do that and just a little bit more.
A 5K stretches your physical limits as you run or walk the 3.2 mile course from the Community Center to Denton Elementary. But at this 5K, you are also “Increasing the luck for kids and dogs!”
St. Patrick’s Day was established to honor the selfless service of St. Patrick, the 5th century cleric who moved the faith of thousands in the Irish countryside. Recreation and Parks may not move thousands to spiritual conversion, but we can make a difference in the summer opportunities of our community’s children and in the care of sick or injured animals.
The funds raised enable the department to extend financial assistance to families in need and enrich the programming at the Super Summer Day Camp at Federalsburg, Denton and Greensboro elementary schools. When you register your four-legged family members with you for the run or walk, additional proceeds go to the Caroline Humane Society’s Animal Care Fund. This seventh annual event features a certified race course, chip-timing and professional finish line management by Seashore Striders, performance race shirts for pre-registrants by March 7, post–race refreshments, awards, music, and St. Paddy’s Day costume judging and awards. Race begins at 9 a.m. Dogs in their leprechaun or green spirit costumes will certainly add to the celebration and will be especially recognized.
Special events like this engage our community nonprofit partners and the financial support from our corporate sponsors: Sustainable Science LLC, Winn Transport, Tri-Gas and Oil, Provident State Bank, Towers Concrete, High Road School, Seashore Striders and Walmart. Our nonprofit partners include Caroline Human Services Council and Caroline Humane Society.
Look for the Caroline County Camp Guide scheduled for release to Caroline County libraries, public schools and local businesses by March 12.
